Where I'm From
by Shoshauna Clark
I am from safety pins, hair pins and coconut hair oil,
from the stench of urine soaked nappies and chai tea.
I am from rain, monsoon rains, roaring down.
I am from mango trees
and the jasmine bush
whose perfume still captures hold of me.
I'm from chocolate cake and key lime pie,
from root canals and panadol.
I'm from the well-versed
and the ill-mannered,
from the alcoholic and the self-absorbed.
I'm from som tam, cha ca, kra pao, banh beo
and pani puri.
I'm from Bangkok International Airport and United Nations International School, biscuits, momos and tomato chutney.
I’m from humming 747s
and purple vibrating floors.
I’m from misty, foggy, Himalayan views,
to bright, blinding Colorado skies.
I’m from Sukhumvit city lights, sweltering Calcutta days
and black croaking crows.
I’m from big blade fans and thin worn sheets.
I’m from moth balls and mehndi stains.
I’m from squatting toilets, cockroaches
and gleaming marble floors.
I’m from hotels.
Ahh, yes hotels.
Oberoi Grand, room service, tight-fitted cold bedding
and Orchard Road.
I’m from blistering cold Hanoi days.
I’m from stupid young love and crowded streets.
I’m from both “calm noodles” and “no noodles,”
smiles, and jealousy.

Those noodles will calm down are probably somethng that only a few will ever know! This is a great exercise that you two have started and I will ponder it. I have been writing a great deal lately, not publishing anywhere not even to my 'blog' which reads like a memoir instead of a blog but mainly about things like me being so irate at Karzi, my love for Lebanon, and misc. one sided political commentary. I like the balance of your poems and where you are from. I might try it out on the plane back to where I am not from but feel I belong. Posting this, the second time today, on your birthday. Always in my heart, often on my mind, you feel far away I hope you have some fun today! love, mom
i found this online randomly doing tck search stuff. and i Just wanted to leave a comment of how much this resonated with this fellow tck with pieces of southeast asia wrapped up with her america.
Maly,
thanks for visiting! I am glad you enjoyed the poem. Where does your own tck map cover?
So many of these references I never would have understood before moving to Singapore. Thanks for reminding me of everything I've learned here!
You complete me.
This is really lovely. I check back at your blog regularly -- the lives of the displaced are so intriguing to me -- being displaced myself. My mum's from Calcutta too!
Thanks Chapatikid! I actually got the idea from my sis Preya.
It turned out well.
